How the Paycheck Calculator Works

The calculator first determines your annual gross income — either from your salary or hourly wage × hours × 52 weeks. It then calculates FICA taxes (Social Security at 6.2% and Medicare at 1.45%) on your per-period gross. For federal income tax, it subtracts the 2024 standard deduction ($14,600 single / $29,200 married / $21,900 head of household) from your annual gross to get taxable income, applies the 2024 federal tax brackets, and divides by your pay frequency to get the per-period withholding. The remaining amount after all deductions is your estimated net pay.

Example Calculation

Annual salary $65,000, single filer, paid bi-weekly (26 periods). Gross per period = $2,500. Taxable income = $65,000 − $14,600 = $50,400. Federal tax ≈ $6,617/year = $254.50 per period. Social Security = $155. Medicare = $36.25. Total deductions = $445.75. Net take-home pay = $2,054.25 per bi-weekly paycheck.

Why is my actual paycheck different from this estimate?

This calculator covers only federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare. Your actual paycheck may also have state income tax, local taxes, health insurance premiums, 401(k) contributions, dental/vision, and other deductions. All of those reduce your take-home pay further.
