Sleep Cycle Calculator

Wake up feeling refreshed instead of groggy. Our free sleep cycle calculator tells you the best times to go to sleep or wake up based on 90-minute sleep cycles — so you always wake between cycles, not in the middle of deep sleep.

Each sleep cycle ≈ 90 minutes. It takes ~15 min to fall asleep.

How Sleep Cycles Work

Sleep happens in repeating cycles of approximately 90 minutes. Each cycle moves through light sleep, deep sleep (slow-wave sleep), and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Waking up at the end of a cycle — rather than in the middle of deep sleep — is why you sometimes feel alert and refreshed, and other times feel groggy even after 8 hours.

Recommended Sleep by Age

  • Teenagers (14–17): 8–10 hours (5–6 cycles)
  • Adults (18–64): 7–9 hours (5–6 cycles)
  • Older adults (65+): 7–8 hours (4–5 cycles)
  • 6 cycles = 9 hours — ideal for most adults
  • 5 cycles = 7.5 hours — common "sweet spot"

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a sleep cycle?

A typical sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes, though this can range from 80–110 minutes depending on the individual and the time of night. Early cycles have more deep sleep; later cycles have more REM sleep.

Why do I feel worse after 8 hours than 7.5 hours?

This is sleep inertia — the groggy feeling of waking in the middle of a sleep cycle (deep sleep). 7.5 hours = exactly 5 complete 90-minute cycles, making it a natural wake point. 8 hours falls 30 minutes into your 6th cycle, right in deep sleep for many people.

What is REM sleep?

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is the stage where most dreaming occurs. It's critical for memory consolidation, emotional processing, and creativity. REM sleep makes up about 20–25% of total sleep and becomes more dominant in the later cycles of the night.

Is it better to sleep 6 or 7.5 hours?

From a sleep cycle perspective, both 6 hours (4 cycles) and 7.5 hours (5 cycles) align with natural wake points. However, chronic sleep of only 6 hours is linked to reduced cognitive function and health risks. 7.5 hours is the better choice for most adults when possible.

Do naps follow the same 90-minute cycle?

Yes. For naps, 20 minutes (before entering deep sleep) or 90 minutes (one full cycle) are the most refreshing durations. The infamous "coffee nap" — drinking coffee then napping for 20 minutes — lets caffeine kick in right as you wake, maximizing alertness.
